You’ve probably heard both terms — LPG and Natural Gas — when talking about energy. Despite sounding similar, they’re actually very different. Here on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, LPG is the main type of gas used, as there are currently no natural gas pipelines servicing our region.

So, what sets them apart? Let’s take a look.

Supply: How Gas Gets to You

Natural Gas travels through underground pipelines, delivered directly to your home or business. It’s convenient, but that also means you can only use it if your property is connected to the network.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is supplied in cylinders and delivered wherever you need it. Think of it like a packaged product: no pipelines, no connection fees — just reliable, flexible gas supply for homes, cafes, workshops, and more.

That’s why LPG is so popular on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. It gives homes, restaurants, and businesses all the benefits of gas without being tied to a network.

What’s in the Gas: Chemical Differences

Here’s something most people don’t realise — Natural Gas and LPG are completely different gases.

  • Natural Gas is mostly methane, piped directly from underground reserves.
  • LPG is a mix of propane and butane, derived from oil refining and natural gas processing. It’s sometimes called a natural gas liquid, even though it isn’t technically a natural gas.

Because of this, LPG burns hotter and has higher energy content than natural gas. It’s also portable, widely available, and in many areas — including Queensland — can be more affordable.

In short:
Natural Gas = methane (piped)
LPG = propane/butane (bottled)

Because of these differences, appliances designed for one type of gas cannot safely use the other unless professionally converted by a licensed gas fitter.

Practical Advantages of LPG

  • Portable: Cylinders can be delivered anywhere, making LPG ideal for homes, businesses, and outdoor use.
  • Flexible: No pipeline required; easy to move and adjust supply.
  • High energy content: Produces more heat per unit than natural gas.
  • Cost-effective: In many cases, LPG can be cheaper than connecting to a natural gas network.
